چکیده
Submitted for the DFD11 Meeting of The American Physical Society Hydrodynamic instability induced by a precipitation reaction in a Hele-Shaw cell YUKI ISHII, YUICHIRO NAGATSU, Nagoya Institute of Technology, 466-8555, Japan, ANNE DE WIT, Nonlinear Physical Chemistry Unit, CP 231, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), 1050 Brussels, Belgium — We experimentally demonstrate hydrodynamic fingering destabilization of the interface between two miscible solutions of a reactant A and another reactant B respectively and of same viscosity upon displacement in a Hele-Shaw cell. The instability is driven by an A+B→C precipitation reaction producing a solid C and thus changing the local value of the permeability in the cell. The fingering pattern are observed to be different depending on whether A displaces B or vice-versa. A reaction-diffusionconvection (RDC) model describing the related dynamics is proposed. The origin of the instability is explained on the basis of the underlying mobility profile depending on the one-dimensional reaction-diffusion concentration profiles. Nonlinear simulations of the related RDC model reproduce the experimentally observed instability and explain that the asymmetric characteristics of the patterns depending on whether A displaces B or vice-versa are due to differences in diffusivity properties of A and B. متن کاملA granular Rayleigh-Taylor instability: experiments and simulations
A granular instability is studied experimentally and numerically as a packing of dense granular material positioned above a gap of air falls under gravity in a closed Hele-Shaw cell; a granular analog of the RayleighTaylor instability. A characteristic pattern of fingers separated by dilute bubbles emerges along the interface, and, in contrast to the classical, hydrodynamic instability, a trans...
متن کاملOn a new surfactant-driven fingering phenomenon in a Hele-Shaw cell
According to the Saffman–Taylor criterion there is no instability when a more viscous fluid is displacing a less viscous one in a Hele-Shaw cell. Yet an instability was observed experimentally (Chan et al. 1997) in the same classical set-up but with the inner walls of the cell coated with surfactant solution. Linear stability analysis is applied to reveal the basic mechanism of this new instabi...
متن کاملTwo-phase Flow in Rotating Hele-shaw Cells with Coriolis Effects
The free boundary problem of a two phase flow in a rotating Hele-Shaw cell with Coriolis effects is studied. Existence and uniqueness of solutions near spheres is established, and the asymptotic stability and instability of the trivial solution is characterized in dependence on the fluid densities.
متن کاملSubcritical Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in a Hele-Shaw cell.
We investigate experimentally the subcritical behavior of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability for a gas-liquid shearing flow in a Hele-Shaw cell. The subcritical curve separating the solutions of a stable plane interface and a fully saturated nonlinear wave train is determined. Experimental results are fitted by a fifth order complex Ginzburg-Landau equation whose linear coefficients are compared ...
